By now, many of you who read my blog about Paddington, London are aware of my affinity for this special place because of the unique qualities it offers tourists visiting London, but in this article I’d like to address a special situation that in this day and age doesn’t happen very often.

It starts with The Stylotel Hotel, which over the past three or so years has become my home away from home (see my review of this hotel here). One of the things I’ve observed over time is how special the staff are and, equally special, the staff’s relationship with its owner Paul Charalambous. They are fiercely loyal to him, and he to them, by being a true humanitarian when it comes to their personal needs by going above and beyond where your average employer goes in making sure his employees are taken care of both at work and in their personal lives. I believe that this is what makes them a truly exceptional hotel staff which is a major factor as to why this hotel is a such great place to stay.

With all of this in mind, I’d like to share a personal experience which occurred during a recent stay there. I was standing in the lobby having a conversation with hotel manager Andreas Iona, when one of the cleaning staff approached him, offering what appeared to be a folded piece of paper. She opened it up, and tucked inside was an American $100 bill which she said she found on the floor of the last room she cleaned: room 205. My room. Indeed, I had placed some $100 bills into the safe earlier in the day, and this one apparently fell to the floor and under the bed without my seeing it. I was astonished. Admittedly, as of late, I have become very cynical of today’s society, but this was truly a ‘maybe there’s hope for humanity after all’ moment. I thanked her profusely for her honesty and immediately offered her a few British pounds which she politely refused, but I insisted she take it.

Let’s face it, most of us are wary of people coming into our hotel rooms while we’re out during the day, and many of us (myself included) go to great lengths to make sure we leave nothing to chance, but as of now, I leave my room comfortable in the knowledge that I’m leaving my belongings in good hands. Thanks to the wonderful staff that work for this hotel.

Paddington is of course famous for one little bear from Peru who’s partial to marmalade and is recognised all over the world.

But now there’s a new Bear in town with the opening of Paddington’s latest pub – The Bear which occupies the former Cork and Bottle wine bar on Spring Street, near the station.

The business has been taken over by The Craft Beer Company and is the company’s ninth London outlet offering a bewildering choice of 41 beers all sourced from small independent breweries.

General manager Kiran tells me his food menu is limited to eight kinds of burger and fish and chips – as he wants to do one type of food and to do that well.

The Best Way To Get Around London

Taking The Tube from Paddington is the best way to get around London - This London Travel Planner shows you why

I have always recommended The Tube as the best way to get around London. Here’s why:

  • It’s the quickest way to get around London
  • It’s the most convenient form of transportation in London
  • It’s the most economical form of transportation in London
  • It’s incredibly easy to navigate

Here’s a tip:
Get yourself an Oyster Card which can be purchased at many of the shops located near to the London Underground stations. You simply top them up at any of the ticket machines in the stations and use them to touch your way in and out of the turnstiles at the stations.

Taking the Tube to the attractions is a great way to round out your London Experience - You'll get a real feel for London

You’ll be traveling with busy Londoners going to and from work.

Nothing has given me such a true sense of the real London like the Tube. You’ll be traveling with busy Londoners hurrying about, trying to get to the their platform. Be sure to always ride the escalator on the right side, as the left side is reserved for those who need to quickly rush up and down the stairs to make their trains!

You’ll be traveling with people from all over the world.

The Tube will give you a real feel for how international a city London is. It’s not unusual to hear more than 3 or 4 different languages being spoken on your ride to your destination.

Be sure to drop a few coins in the busker’s guitar case.

It’s very common to hear buskers playing music in the tunnels that connect the platforms to the rest of the station and there’s something about that sound that makes me smile and think: “Yep, I’m back in London”.

Stay in Paddington and you can maximize your vacation time using The Tube

But why Paddington? You ask. Because Paddington is the only area in London with direct access to all of London’s major tourist attractions. Taking advantage of this fact, and using my extensive knowledge of Central London, I have come up with a plan that almost always adds bonus time to client’s London vacation time. Some take advantage of the extra time by taking a day trip to somewhere outside of London. Others use the time to see their ‘B-List’ attractions. These are attractions that are not in close proximity to the major attractions and are therefore out of the way. A good example of these are the Zebra Crossing at Abbey Road Studios or Harrod’s Department Store.

To demonstrate my plan, let's have a look at this map:

  • Portobello Market
  • Kensington Palace

As you can see on this map, I have placed 8 numbered yellow circles laid over various areas of Central London. These circles represent the eight Tube stations which give you access to all of Central London’s major tourist attractions. Below the map is a list of each circle’s Tube station, tourist attractions, and the Tube Line you would use to get there. When planning their London vacation most people (myself included on my first visit) make a list of the attractions they want to see, but because they don’t have the knowledge of where things are in relation to one another, they end up zig zagging all over London, oftentimes coming back to an area they had previously visited, when they could have just picked an area and seen all of the attractions in that area during one visit.

This map makes it easy for you to pick an area for sightseeing on a particular day, and know what’s there for you to see so you can see them all in one trip. No zig zagging.

But my plan takes this a step further…

Using my knowledge of where attractions are in relationship to others allows you to see even more. I refer to it as "Adjacent Planning"

Here is one of the most common Adjacent Area plans I use with my London Travel Planner clients:

Today’s Itinerary:

  • Tower Bridge and Saint Paul’s – The Tower Of London is the most time consuming London tourist attraction; a half day at least depending on how thorough you are about sightseeing. These two areas are close enough to one another that if you’re feeling really ambitious, there is a very nice walk along the Thames from Saint Paul’s to Tower Bridge that affords you a wonderful photo opportunity of the bridge as you approach it. If you want more information on this walk contact me.

To Saint Paul’s from Paddington: Paddington (Lancaster Gate Station) Central Line to Saint Paul’s

Saint Paul’s to Tower Bridge: Saint Paul’s Station to Bank Station. Walk from Bank to Monument Station. (stations are interconnected) Circle Line to Tower Bridge Station

Back to Paddington: Tower Bridge Station Circle Line to Paddington Station.

Here’s an example of an Adjacent Area plan, combining Westminster and Charing Cross stations I use for travelers who may only have one day in London, maybe due to a layover, or a business trip with one free day.

Today’s Itinerary:

  • Westminster and Charing Cross -Westminster can be combined with Charing Cross but you’ll need a full day to do it. You’ll be amazed at how much of iconic London you’ll see by combining these two areas: Big Ben, Parliament, London Eye, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, The Mall, Trafalgar Square, Whitehall and 10 Downing Street. All of these iconic London places, all in one day!

To Westminster from Paddington: Circle Line at Paddington Station to Westminster Station.

Back to Paddington: Charing Cross Station Bakerloo Line to Paddington Station or Westminster Station Circle Line to Paddington Station.

Are you getting the idea?

It’s really just about knowing which tourist attraction is where, and a knowledge of the London Underground Stations and where they are located in relation to the tourist attractions. This is a tried and true method I’ve been using for over 10 years, and I almost always receive positive feedback on it.

If you have any questions about any of what I’ve written in this article, please contact me through the contact page, or by using the Facebook Messenger App here on the page.

The Sussex Arms located at 21 London Street, close to the junction with Sussex Gardens is an airplane theme pub featuring genuine original reclining seating from the only supersonic transatlantic airplane Concorde.

Seats once occupied by the likes of Diana Ross, Mike Tyson. Phil Collins, Elton John, Mike Jagger, Joan Collins, Robert Redford, Pavarotti, Sean Connery, Liz Taylor and Rod Stewart are now shared by all the Sussex’s customers enjoying the end of lockdown.

The Sussex has undergone a phenomenal refurbishment during the pandemic and now features plush black leather seating, genuine airplane fuselages mounted on the walls, funky airport style signage, and a comfortable upscale business class lounge at the rear of the pub.

So, when next visiting Paddington be sure to check in at the Sussex – and enjoy the flight.

Today Paddington welcomed our Scottish friends (or foes) for the Euro 2020 match at Wembley with England. As always, our Caledonian rivals are ready to upset England’s crazy belief that the success of 1966 can be repeated. Well you never know. Let’s see how the game goes tomorrow. May the best team win!

Paddington took its first major step towards the return to normality with the reopening of it’s pubs, shops, and other small businesses. As was the case with the weather having an effect on the opening of the pubs with outdoor sitting a few weeks back, The Almighty continued His campaign against Paddington’s pub goers by unleashing the sort of weather that King Lear himself would have recognised. In spite of all this, stoical Paddington locals braved the winds and the rain and showed up to share a drink and have a bite with their friends and neighbours. Interestingly, when the weather clears in between the bouts of rain, people seem to prefer sitting outside rather than inside which I suspect could be because they’ve been conditioned to sitting outside for so long, and the weather though dreadful, is not that cold. Either way, it’s great finally to have to the option to sit inside as the weather seems to be stuck in second gear trying to get to warmer days. Enjoy yourselves at the pub in Paddington!

One of Paddington’s most historic pubs is now welcoming customers once more, though patrons are restricted to outdoor service in light of the ongoing Covid regulations.

Customers are still forbidden from enjoying the experience of sitting in the interior of this remarkably well preserved genuine Victorian public house with its fabulous engraved glasswork and stunning gallery of nineteenth century Royalty displayed on every surface.

However, the pub’s landlord and landlady, Chris and Helen (pictured above) tell us that they are really excited to be opening again after so may months during which the locals have told them they have really missed their pub.

Tiny Rebels’s Boogaloo – a passion fruit Indian Pale Ale – is an innovation waiting for the Victoria’s first returning customers, though the establishment’s booze hounds will probably be supping something a little more traditional.

Seating capacity outside is at 60, and the kitchen will be back in operation on 12 May. Paddington is slowly is coming back to life and as Queen Elizabeth told the nation right at the beginning of this awful pandemic: “We will meet again”.

In spite of the slightly chilly weather, business is brisk at Paddington’s two garden pubs as locals are flocking to The Monkey Puzzle on Sussex Gardens and The Heron just a stone’s throw away on Norfolk Crescent. Currently customers can only eat and drink in the outdoor areas of the pubs, so Gary at The Monkey Puzzle is taking bookings for two-hour slots and non-traditional pub table-service-only is the rule. You must also wear a mask when leaving your table to use the lavatory or exit the premises. Heaters scattered around the outdoor space make the experience more comfortable when the sun goes in.

The same is true at the Heron with the outdoor space at the back of the pub becoming a busy meeting place for thirsty locals starved of human companionship for so many weeks.

Paddington’s locals are truly showing a ‘Blitz Spirit’ as they brave the temperatures, finally able to enjoy the freedom of a pint or two in a happy neighbourhood atmosphere after weeks of lockdown.

Eating out in Paddington need not break the bank. In addition to the wide selection of restaurants there are some really great cheap and cheerful cafés where locals ands visitors can enjoy a quick and tasty meal without breaking the bank.

And these are the cafés that I use all the time, having eaten everywhere in the area, and judging these to be the best for quality, value for money, and the welcome you receive from the people that own them and work there.

Two of them are located on London Street – the street you come onto when leaving Paddington Station from the main exit. Straight away on the right-hand side you’ll find Lite Bite which might be an ideal spot to decamp for a while if you’ve arrived in London ahead of the check-in time at your hotel. Maybe dump your baggage where you are staying and have a coffee at this cozy little cafe just off Norfolk Square – a perfect spot to watch the world go by.

lite-bite-cafe-paddington-london-bestplacetostayinlondon.com_

Further down London Street you will find Mimo’s, another friendly café offering moderately priced meals from breakfast-time to lunch and dinner, with a main focus on Italian dishes. It’s also only two doors away from The Sussex Arms, which allows you to take your Mimo’s takeaway into the pub to eat, if you order drinks there.

If you want to enjoy the best breakfast in the area, try out the Craven Cafe on Craven Terrace. There you will see your English breakfast or pancakes being prepared in the open kitchen in this little gem of a place by the only two staff that the place can accommodate. It’s a little pricier than the other local cafés, but that’s because they take a great deal of care to get everything right – the bacon is good quality, the fried eggs are spot on, and the butter packets for the toast isn’t granite hard for spreading. This café is where you’ll find local people of a morning tucking-in at their leisure while perusing the day’s newspapers.

craven-cafe-paddington-bestplacetostayinlondon.com-copy
Craven Cafe

Just around the corner on Craven Hill is La Costa Café (not the be confused with the big coffee chain – this is a small privately owned business), which serves affordable freshly prepared Italian fare to eat-in or take away, including rolls, pizza, really really good pastas (I am one of their best customers) and other meals of the day.

Fancy a picnic in style?

lacosta-cafe-paddington-bestplacetostayinlondon.com_

Straight across the street from La costa is Laurents, a French-owned delicatessen offering a fabulous selection of continental foods ideal for taking away for a posh picnic in nearby Hyde Park, or even back in your hotel room. It’s by no means cheap, but everything on sale here is top quality, including its breads, seafood, salads, cheeses, and savoury and sweet baked goods, as well as its enticing selection of cakes on display in the window. I’m a sucker for the lumpfish caviar, unfortunately not recommended for the budget traveller.
