My name is Matt Smith and I live in Philadelphia. In January 2002 I was invited by a group of friends to visit London with them. I had never been there, but growing up I had always marveled at how iconic London is, but as intriguing as the idea was, I graciously declined the offer, citing work pressures, and also the fact that I didn’t have a passport. Within a week, and with the constant coaxing of my then 12-year old daughter, I elected to go. Everyone in our group was given a task for the planning of the trip, and my task was to figure out where in London our group should stay.
The internet provided limited help back then as it was still in its infancy. After complaining to my co-workers who were growing increasingly annoyed at my inability to make the decision, they took it upon themselves to settle it once and for all. I begrudgingly agreed to make the decision utilizing a plan they concocted with the help of a large map of London, the conference room table, and a blindfold. I was led into the room where I was blindfolded, and instructed to drop my finger onto the map after being turned around three times. My finger dropped onto the map at a place called Paddington. My only familiarity with Paddington was its legendary bear – and that was about it.
It didn’t take long for my love and passion for London to take hold. In 2009, after approximately 15 visits to London, I was approached by a couple I know, who were aware of my frequent trips to London. They had just booked a flight to London for themselves and their kids, and they asked if I would help them with some of the particulars of their visit, like where they should stay, which hotel to choose, and a few other items. I enthusiastically volunteered my assistance! When they returned, they told me how great their visit was, and how my assistance in helping them plan made it an incredible experience! Thus, The London Travel Planner was born!
While advising people about their London visits, almost without exception the first question I am asked is “Where do you recommend that we stay?”. The answer I always give is Paddington. In fact, I do so emphatically because I have learned over the years that for a whole host of reasons that it truly is the best place to stay in London. Making a website to tell the world this fact just made sense so here we are!
And now I’m sharing this passion with you. I’m confident that after just one visit, you’ll agree it is truly the best area to stay in London! Be sure to drop me a line and share your Paddington experience!
